SMARTIES® is all about colour! That is why we want to play our part in helping to create a more colourful world for our children through all our SMART Initiatives, and to make our delicious chocolate more sustainable.
From the responsible sourcing of cocoa for our yummy chocolate to carefully packing our SMARTIES® in recyclable paper packaging, we are finding solutions to help protect our precious world for children and future generations.
Smart Cocoa Sourcing
Sustainably Sourced Cocoa
SMARTIES® cocoa is 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified and is sustainably sourced through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan®. Not only does this make our SMARTIES® taste delicious, but it also ensures we are helping to build a brighter future for cocoa farmers and their families.
The Nestlé Cocoa Plan was established in 2009 to help improve the lives of farmers in our cocoa supply chain. It has three main areas of focus:
- Better farming - addressing issues such as agricultural practices and tackling deforestation.
- Better lives - which seeks to empower women and eliminate child labour.
- Better cocoa - which covers our Rainforest Alliance certification, and building long-term relationships in our supply chain.

Supporting Kids’ Education
Sustainably-sourced cocoa is not just about ingredients. As part of the Nestlé Cocoa Plan®, and particularly close to our hearts at SMARTIES®, we support kids’ education in cocoa-growing communities. Since 2009, we have supported over 44,500 children in their education through the construction or reburbishment of 49 schools and 98 bridge classes in Côte d'Ivoire. By doing this, we are providing kids with an alternative to working on parents’ farms, which can be detrimental to their physical and mental wellbeing. Great Quality
We love colour, which is why SMARTIES® come in a wonderful array of red, orange, blue, green, yellow, pink, violet and brown sweets – all created without any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Deliciously smooth milk chocolate has been at the heart of SMARTIES® for more than 80 years, and through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan® we train farmers to improve the quality of our cocoa. No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives
SMARTIES® contain no artificial colours, and this has been the case since 2006. Our bright colours come from food colourings created by mixing natural ingredients including seaweed, beetroot and radish!
Portion guidance on every SMARTIES® pack
With lots of sweets in every pack, SMARTIES® are easy for you to portion out with your friends and family, making sure you have just the right amount! Portion guidance can always be found on our packaging, making it easy and simple to know how many SMARTIES® equal one serving, demonstrating how it can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. However, please remember that portion sizes should be adjusted for children of different ages. We also offer a smaller pack size as an easy treat for the little ones.
